Social Distance in Communication

Every relationship is a pilgrimage it is a journey which has five levels of communication. Space plays an important role in communication. According to John Borg, ninety three percent of the communication is revealed through the body language and only seven percent of communication does consist of words.

Zones of communication:
There are four different zones. The first zone is the intimate zone which is reserves for close family members, children and for lovers. The second zone is used for holding conversation with friends, chatting with the neighbors and for some kind group discussion. The third zone is used for communication with the strangers and newly bloomed friendship and new acquaintances. The fourth and final zone is used for lectures, speeches, and for the public distance which is reserved for large audiences.

Personal space:
The space that surrounds an individual which is regarded as psychologically theirs is referred to as personal space. When the personal space of an individual is encroached by someone, he or she feels anxious and uncomfortable.

Entering the personal spaces indicates familiarity with the person and sometimes even indicates intimacy with that person. Though it is difficult to maintain personal space in modern urban society, the personal space of an individual should be respected to hold vital conversation.

Communication and space:
Encroaching the personal space may make the other refrain from you resulting in a reverse effect in communication. A complete skill in handling the space effectively is an important factor in some important meetings and conversations. Often the seating arrangements in interviews and in group discussions are designed to facilitate appropriate spacing during conversation.
